"It began to become fashionable about seven years ago," explains Jordi Lucena (36 years old), its manager. At first it was a more common practice in the age range from 40 to 60 years, for four years the public has expanded and today conquers young people of 20 years. Lucena inherited the club from Kurt Fischer, a millionaire Swiss banker who opened what is considered the first BSMD store in the Catalan capital. "He was the first attacker in Spain," says Lucena. "It all started with him, I then had four Japanese teachers and one Italian to perfect the technique, but in Spain all the good attackers have learned in Barcelona and the oldest, from Kurt." Lucena says that of all the variants that the club includes (bondage, domination, submission, candles, etc.), the shibari is currently "the best view" . The Cinco Rosas Club organizes two two-hour workshops every month to begin in the art of stringing. They cost 15 euros and it is necessary to go as a couple to perform them. "Actually, the only requirements are three: to be of legal age, to come dressed in black and to be a member," Lucena details. The course involves a first contact in which the different techniques and patterns are explained. There are many ways to tie : with the arms behind the back, with the ropes forming a hexagonal figure in the front of the torso, rhomboid, with an X-shaped cross harness or the tsuri, which includes the body suspension . To popularize this art, Lucena promoted The Shibari Experience , a book that includes photographs of boys and girls who undergo a Shibari session for the first time, from which they are about to release the third volume. The photographer he usually works with, Tentension, is also behind Tattooatados, a book equally dedicated to the shibari in which all the portrayed show their tattoos.
In another very different position, Barcelona Shibari Dojo moves , the only place dedicated exclusively to the shibari of the city founded by Victor, who prefers to remain anonymous. In this shibari training and practice center that follows the Yikinaga Do school, the focus is on martial arts. "I respect everything that other colleagues do, but in Dojo we move away from everything that has to do with the erotic . For us the shibari is something clean, neutral, nothing sexual or intimate. It is forbidden to come alone, it is mandatory to attend couple to the sessions, and it is also forbidden to take pictures, "says Victor, who opened this gym-like venue in 2016 with the blessing of his teacher, the Danish Yukinaga Max Sensei.
Victor's obsession is to ensure a "healthy and quiet environment in which to have fun" and for this, discretion is very important. "This world is full of people who want to show off, flirt, take pictures and become famous. We try to keep all that aside, that is not the public that interests me," he says. Hence, everything that surrounds Dojo gives off an aura of secrecy and that Victor controls the image a lot. "I do not do this to make a business, in fact I lose money. I dedicate myself to rent apartments. That is why I am not interested according to what type of advertising. At this step we will end up on the newscast," he jokes about the unstoppable popularity of the shibari. In Dojo, nudity, solo suspensions and alcohol use are prohibited before practice .
