Apple may soon get hold of James Bond, Rocky and Robocop - Geeko

Apple is said to have entered into negotiations with the controlling shareholders of the venerable Metro Goldwyn Mayer to buy the entire MGM catalog, according to CNBC. The Californian giant would not be the only interested since Netflix would also be in the running.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer had come close to bankruptcy in 2010, before several shareholders saved the company. If it sold part of its catalog to Warner Bros, the Metro Goldwyn Mayer is still the owner of several large licenses, including James Bond, Rocky, the Mutant or Robocop . Franchises on which the streaming giants are now eyeing to strengthen their catalog.

A prime opportunity for Apple

Without any experience in the entertainment market, Apple is well aware of the weaknesses of its catalog, which is why it has surrounded itself with select personalities, including Steven Spielberg.

Buying a studio like MGM could be a big plus for Apple and its streaming service. In addition to strengthening its catalog of films and series with existing MGM content, Apple could develop new films and series based on the most popular MGM franchises.

Historically however, Apple has always been opposed to large acquisitions. Its biggest buyout to date is that of the Beats business, valued at $ 3 billion. Acquiring the MGM - estimated at $ 10 billion - could be unprecedented for a company like Apple.
