Apple wants a 100% recyclable iPhone - Geeko

In 2016, Apple had taken advantage of one of its keynotes to unveil Liam, a recycling robot. It was able to reverse engineer an iPhone by recovering components that could still be used, including precious metals. However, Liam was adapted to the iPhone of the time. Today, the design of the brand's phones has changed, which is why Apple has developed a new recycling robot, Daisy.

Like Liam, it allows automated boning of newer iPhones. Daisy is able to completely disassemble an iPhone. The spare parts for the iPhone lights are then sent to subcontractors specializing in the treatment and cleaning of recycled materials. La Pomme claims to be able to recover 14 materials. These can then be reused in the manufacture of new iPhones or other Apple products.

The robot is particularly productive. He works 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. He is able to completely dismantle 200 iPhones per hour, or 4,800 per day or 1.6 million smartphones per year. Unfortunately, Daisy's pace is nothing compared to the number of iPhones sold each year. We are talking about several hundred million smartphones.

Just a start

The Californian firm remains optimistic and assures that this is a start. Ultimately, it hopes to use only recycled components from iPhones or smartphones from other sectors. She would also like to offer her robot to other firms, particularly in the automotive sector.

Great promises from Apple that do not particularly frighten lithium miners. Indeed, the growing demand for this material can certainly never be satisfied by recycling iPhone.
