The Samsung Q950TS has a screen ratio of 99%. - SAMSUNG

  • The Consumer Electronics Show took place from January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas.
  • A showcase of technical innovations in 2020, the CES has, as usual, turned on new televisions that make you dream.
  • 4K or 8K, rollable or rollable and now always very large ... only our wallet may not be there!

"Giant screens", "8K", "OLED" and "maximum integration" are the watchwords of TV manufacturers at CES in Las Vegas. From January 7 to 10, the Consumer Electronics Show aims to be the world showcase of the latest innovations in terms of image quality and it must be admitted that this year, visitors can take full eyes.

Starting with The Wall from Samsung. CES star product, this 292-inch screen wall (7.4 meters diagonal!) Is a real dream. It is a modular screen only 30 mm thick, made up of different sub-screens (or tiles) that clip onto each other. The technique developed by the manufacturer thus makes it possible to assemble video walls of the desired size. The one in Las Vegas is equivalent to a budget of 1.2 million euros. Notice to amateurs…

An 8K (almost) borderless TV

Cheaper (but still expensive), the new QLED TV from South Korea also impresses with its virtual absence of edges.

8K LCD, available in 65 '' / 165 cm, 75 '' / 190 cm and 85 '' 215 cm, the Q950TS thus has a screen ratio of 99%. Only a super thin frame surrounds its slab. This frame conceals on the sides four speakers coupled to two rear subwoofers. With the Q950T, the image literally floods the room, the TV blends all the more with the decor as it has the famous Ambient mode from Samsung.

By a clever trick (a photo taken from a smartphone and a dedicated application), Ambiant allows you to display the wall located at the back of the screen which thus becomes practically invisible. Measuring only 15 mm over its entire rear surface, the Q950TS stands out as a true technological feat. You will have to pay the price: from 6,000 euros in 65 '' / 165 cm. Note that he could embark Google Assistant or Alexa from Amazon, Samsung seems to give up here to Bixby, his personal assistant.

8K QLED at (almost) reasonable price

The Chinese TCL asserts itself a little more on the market each year. A true alternative brand with quality products at tight prices, this year TCL is presenting its X915 sound on the CES, an 8K QLED TV of 75 '' / 190 cm which should be released in France for around 5,000 euros. It is 2,000 euros less than the same size at Samsung.

For this Dolby Vision compatible model, but also IMAX Enhanced certified (an audio and video quality label), the manufacturer also places great emphasis on sound quality.

Thus, the X915 has its own Dolby Atmos soundbar. And this is developed by Onkyo (who knows a lot about it…).

An ambushable TV laser

The Hisense brand offers a credible alternative to the big screens. With its concept called Self Rising Laser TV , the manufacturer offers a discreet all-in-one and offering a high quality 4K image.

Or a laser projector hidden in a low cabinet and associated with a roll-up screen. The one and the other are only 19 cm apart. Hidden in the cabinet when the projector is off, this 70 '' / 118 cm screen (which is none other than a conventional video projection screen) unrolls and rolls up at will. The concept is reminiscent of that of LG's rollable OLED TV whose sale is constantly postponed.

Cinema images adopt Doby Vision IQ

Dazzling by its image quality, the Panasonic HZ2000 is an OLED television set that wants to stand out with its brightness "20% higher than that of a conventional OLED television set," insists the Japanese brand. This is made possible in particular by the presence of an ambient light sensor which automatically improves the brightness of the screen in broad daylight.

A good point when using the Cinema Mode of the device which opacifies (like on other televisions) the image for a rendering close to that of a dark room. The HZ2000 is thus the first in the world to support Dolby Vision IQ, a new specificity based on the contribution of this famous light sensor.

Like its predecessor, the GZ200, two speakers located on the top of the device are able to recreate Dolby Atmos audio effects with sound reproduction from bottom to top. The HZ2000 is expected before summer at 3,500 euros (in 55 '' / 140 cm) and 4,500 euros (65 '' / 165 cm).

A TV falling from the ceiling

At LG, surprise with a curved screen. Yes, "curable". The prototype OLED TV presented by LG can go from a completely flat state to a curved state in seconds.

The manufacturer also provides a layer with its flexible 65 '' OLED TVs. After the roll-up model presented just a year ago in Las Vegas (and announced for sale in France for the summer of 2020), make way for the same… unrollable! This time, the television descends from the ceiling like a conventional video projection screen. While waiting to be able to one day be able to offer us this wonder, note that all the LG televisions released since 2018 should soon benefit from an update to offer them access to the Apple TV + streaming service.

LG continue to bet on 8K OLED TVs with its ZX series available in 77 and 88 inches. - LG

This will obviously be the case for the new Signature 8K TVs in the ZX series (in 77 '' / 195 cm and 88 '' / 223 cm), showcasing LG's expertise in OLED display technology. For the moment, these nuggets do not yet have a launch date. As for the hour price, it would be question of 15 to 20,000 euros for the ZX 77 inches ...

When it's the frame of the screen that produces the sound…

Passage required on the Sony stand. With its future ZH8, the Japanese manufacturer embraces the 8K with a range of Android TVs available in 75 and 85 inches and Dolby Vision compatible.

These incorporate Full Array LED technology. It is a backlight device that lines the back of the screen with a considerable number of LEDs and thus offers deeper blacks, close to those of OLEDs.

For sound, the ZH8s are equipped with a rear subwoofer, but also with what Sony calls a Frame Tweeter . According to the manufacturer, the Frame Tweeter consists of a function which "vibrates the frame of the television set to emit sound and give the impression that the audio tape comes from the center of the screen" (sic!). Sony does not indicate a date or launch price for its ZH8.
