According to scientists, this research point is necessary to assess the state of the environment in the region. Currently, experts do not have real knowledge about the sources of emissions, the amount and composition of pollution of the Arctic ecosystem.

“The station was created in order to capture harmful impurities in our atmosphere. The problem of black carbon pollution is especially relevant for the Arctic region. The station is open, it has already begun to work, ”said the director of the D.V. Nuclear Physics Research Institute Skobeltsyna Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosova (SINP MSU) Mikhail Igorevich Panasyuk.

Bely Island is the northernmost territory of the Yamal-Nenets Okrug, it is located on the path of air masses from Siberian regions with high anthropogenic and industrial activity to the Arctic.

Studies at the new station will determine the degree of environmental damage that the atmosphere of the Arctic causes burning of fossil fuels and natural gas, as well as forest fires, scientists say.

At the station, instruments are installed that are designed to measure the concentration of black carbon and physicochemical analysis of the composition of the background and polluted atmosphere.

In 2014, a research hospital of the Russian Arctic Development Center was also established on Beloy Island, and in 2015, scientists from the Institute of Industrial Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences installed a Picarro laser gas analyzer for continuous measurements of greenhouse gas concentrations, determination of their sources and emission volumes at a distance of 1 thousand km, the press service of Moscow State University.

Earlier, scientists from the geological faculty of Moscow State University told RT that the Arctic underwater Mendeleev ridge has a continental foundation.
