The time has come to take stock of 2019 and choose the best video games of the year . Back in June, how far it is, we made a first selection of what had caught our attention, but the list has changed a lot since then.

I am not sure that 2019 is going to be remembered as one of the great years in the history of video games, but many memorable titles have been released that well deserve a hole in our memory, or even in our hearts.

Ironically, it has been a great year for promises that have been on the air for decades , such as the launch of Shenmue III; or the announcement of a new Half-Life, both milestones of this past November. And this without forgetting that Final Fantasy VII Remake was also dated, a title that had been on the air for more than a decade and whose first chapter will arrive in 2020.

But let's not anticipate what is to come and let's focus on the good things of this year. As always, you do not have to share the position of the games I have chosen , or even their presence on this list. Tastes are a very personal thing and what you may have liked a lot, I may not have convinced so much, and vice versa.

10 - Luigi's Mansion 3

After three deliveries, it would be normal for Luigi to be somewhat burned and his games were not so interesting, but that is not the case. The visit to an enchanted hotel could not have been more entertaining for its variety and design.

It is not just a matter of how beautiful the game looks, but of how well the animations of Mario's brother and the ghosts and puzzles add up to such a well-finished set of levels. Even if something sober starts, the sum of comic circumstances and encounters with hilarious bosses elevates this game among the best that Switch has received in 2019.

9 - Untitled Goose Game

A video game of a goose that makes people fucking, what more can you ask for? Although it is very simple and can be finished in two afternoons, the originality of its approach and how fun it can be well make it worthy of this list.

The puzzles are always quite obvious, but solving them is not as easy as it seems at the beginning, especially since it is possible for you to laugh in laughter with some nonsense that the goose does or the poor humans who have to endure it.

Discovering the hidden tasks that you can do and constantly try to do different stumbling to pass the mandatory tests is something so fun in itself that for that reason I recommend it and consider it the best of 2019.

8 - Apex Legends

Fortnite is a children's game, as far as shooting is concerned, compared to Apex Legends. Which does not mean that it is a better game for you, but nobody has managed to leave Fortnite bad, even if it continues to dominate the scene.

Its developers, Respawn Entertainment, come from afar and were the ones who originally placed Call of Duty at the top, and with this game, they have shown that they know how to make fast and agile shooting games like nobody else.

The Internet is full of epic moments and impossible moves thanks to the differentiated abilities of each character and the skill itself of the player. When it is you who manages to carry out a killing in the most impressive way possible, you realize that this game is a real wonder. And so it is impossible to stop playing one game after another.

7 - Control

Shooting sometimes is not enough. Sometimes you need to manipulate your surroundings and take your feet off the ground to have fun, and that's the fantasy that Control gets.

The creators of Alan Wake are experts in making rare games, and if with their previous game they already experimented with the manipulation of environments and with the rare science fiction stories, this videogame manages to settle all those ideas. And although history is chaos and absurdity, except in its successful portrait of bureaucracy as it is, a hell in a parallel universe; Everything else is so entertaining and fun that it can be overlooked.

When you take Control's trick and when you start doing crazy things on each screen, everything fits into place (not literally), you have fun with each fight and you end up wishing a little more when you finish the game.

6 - Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is what is now known as a service game. As Fortnite, it is updated every so often and the way in which it is played varies, which can sometimes be better or worse.

In the case of Destiny, Shadow Bastion continues to improve in what they had done well last year and, although the prospects for this year are not good, it is a video game that continues to give more and more and in which you can spend hours without almost to realize. And as a game to build community, being with your friends doing something that never ceases to be fun and that adds up to things every so often is unsurpassed. No one else has come up with this way of making a video game.

It is a perfect example of well accompanied complexity and video game that can be a hobby in itself. In addition, it is still the shooting video game that gives more pleasure to play of all that have been launched in the last decade.

5 - Resident Evil 2: Remake

Resident Evil 2 is a classic that lives in the memory of the players, so nostalgia often prevents us from seeing the problems that the original game had. This implies that your remake could be either wonderful or horrifying. You can imagine what the result was this time.

Exploring the mythical commissary is a great pleasure, seeing how each shot on the enemies' redeeming body goes through and disfiguring them without killing them is something amazing and the tension is accumulating as you solve puzzles and run away from the new unbeatable enemy included make Each game session, rather than being scary, makes you tense and to the limit.

Even those who played it in their day should recognize that this game is much, much better than its original version and that it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of the year. And in 2020, the Resident Evil 3 remake will arrive, so if you want more after spending it with your two characters, in April you can continue killing zombies.

4 - Outer Wilds

It's a blessing from heaven that games like Outer Wilds are released on Xbox Game Pass. Not having to pay for an extra for something of such quality is a rare avis, but it is appreciated.

The approach of Outer Wilds is simple: you have to explore the space around your home planet, but the turn is very original. You have to do it in 20-minute loops because, oh, it turns out that the system star is going to collapse and take everything ahead. And you are the only being who is aware of it and you must unravel why this happens, why the advanced civilization before yours disappeared and how you can end this loop to save your people.

The exploration games are fantastic when you can get lost in the world in front of you, but always having a watch on your head to carry out the investigations and closing a mission in each loop is also hilarious.

3 - Baba is You

Baba is You is the smartest video game of 2019, with a wide margin. If I tell you that it is a game that translates the ideas of some programming languages and turns it into a video game, you run the same; But deep down, this is what this game is about.

Of that and clearly expose how the 'language' of each world works and go screen after screen complicating it enough so that you do not feel idiotic if you get stuck, but you feel the smartest person in the world when you have found the solution to the puzzle in front of you, it cost you a minute or two hours.

Its aesthetics also adds points to the set, because there is nothing like having the game in front of a simple-looking video game in front of you, which suddenly blows your head with how complicated and deep it is once you enter its dynamics.

Fundamental for any player who loves logical puzzles and challenges, but also for those who do not play the typical shooting games or skill games with the controls.

2 - Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima is one of the few recognized authors of the video game industry. Compared to the cinema, it would be something like Kubrick, but handling more earthly themes, such as war. In the case of this game, it could be said that behind all the background of science fiction and magico-technological dystopia, there is a criticism of the identity crisis and the social division of the United States.

Obviously, you have to get into Death Stranding a lot to get to that point, because on paper, it is a game of "imagine being a Glovo dealer in a post-apocalyptic world." Sam is a poor devil with the mission of uniting the US, literally, with a kind of super-advanced Internet connection. But it is not necessary to hit almost shots nor it is advisable to kill anyone, because the dead come back to life in a terrifying and explosive way, the latter in a very literal way.

The fun thing is to understand the map you move around and get around the obstacles, which can be from the weather to the package thieves, going through the stones along the way.

It is a very different game and with which it is easy to connect and empathize with its protagonist, who is not a killing machine, but only a victim of his circumstances. I wish there were more video games in which your concern is not to shoot the largest number of soldiers in the head, but that your character does not fall when he is going down a hill loaded with 100 kilos of medicines and construction materials to make the world a place a a little better.

1 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro may not invent anything, but the refinement and variation he has made on the formula of the 'Souls', the videogame saga from which he starts, is so perfect that he well deserves this position as the best video game of the year.

Being able to feel like a ninja and like a samurai is something that almost no videogame has ever achieved, and that does so with a combat system so deep and rhythmic, with an amazing setting and with a design of levels, maps and characters that you would like others.

It may be a difficult thing for less experienced players, but I think that any investment of time in this video game rewards you greatly. Mastering Sekiro's combat is the most rewarding experience I've had in 2019 as a player and, I dare to say, several times it has given me more pleasure to end an average enemy of this game than to do the same with some final bosses of the ' Souls' pure and hard.

From Software, its developers, continue to break with each game a quality ceiling that right now only they can impose. I hope this fight with themselves to overcome never ends.
