The British actress stars, along with Ian McKellen, 'The great lie', a dark thriller that hides a great final surprise

It is, with capital letters, the great British lady of interpretation. In The Great Lie , Helen Mirren (London, 1945) has fulfilled a double dream, when placed under the orders of Bill Condon and, in passing, give the replica to an actor whom he admires as Ian McKellen is. In this film, Mirren gives life to Betty, a rich widow who lets herself be duped by Roy (McKellen), a professional trickster who will take the big surprise of her life.

How would you describe a film as complex as this? As a thriller that, in my opinion, has a touch of black cinema. I think he has some of those movies that were made in the 30s and 40s. Did he remind you of Hitchcock's works at some point? Yes. Bill Condon's film fits the concept of an author's work, of a cinematographic creator who knows a lot about cinema. Although it is true that the script and the interpretations are important, the director's work is key. So how do you value working with Bill Condon? The first thing I must say is that everything Ian McKellen had told me about Bill Condon is true. So, if he calls me again to work with him, he has my yes right now. Bill knows how to create a feeling of friendship and loyalty that is special. It would be a great honor to be part of his family of actors and to collaborate with him again in the future. How would you describe Betty, your character on the tape? Betty is a widow with a lot of money in the bank who has a somewhat empty life. Something that leads her to seek company. And that's when he meets Roy online. Roy, who has used a false name, is a person who, like her, also seeks company. Although, after a while, we discovered that it is a scammer and a manipulator.

Betty (Mirren) attends Roy (McKellen) in a moment of complicity between them.

How was working for the first time in cinema with Ian McKellen? It's funny what happened to me in this shoot. Despite being one of our greatest actors of all time and someone whom I respect so much, Sir Ian McKellen is someone capable of making you feel at ease and not intimidated when you are by his side. He is a person who likes to include you in his world. Was it difficult for you to get into the skin of a character as unique as Betty? There are movies in which you have to make a great psychological effort, but this has not been the case due to the many layers that history has. The heart of the plot is quite dark, even if you don't realize it at the beginning. That is why it requires the hand of a great director to master his art. By the way, how are you lying? Do you remember any big lies that you have been forced to tell sometime? I don't do it often, although I probably lied sometimes without realizing it. The most notable lie I remember was the one I told as soon as I arrived in Hollywood. At that time, my husband took me to one of those great parties held there. And I was alone. As I felt quite intimidated at all this, I dedicated myself to lying to all those people who did not know me talking about where I came from, joking with the tattoo I have in my hand and telling them that I did it in jail, since it was part of A band of bikers. The funny thing is that people believed me! It is curious to see how some believe what you tell them.
