Tesla does a lot better than the established automakers in Germany. The California-based company is focused on its innovative product with new technology and the business model of its own fast charging stations. Although the car maker makes a huge loss, it decreases with every car sold because the high initial investment is spread over more vehicles. Tesla was already able to report some quarters of profit, most recently the delivery figures for the third quarter of 2019: Around 97,000 cars went to customers all over the world. Tesla is the global leader in pure electric cars.
In marketing, the company behaves like the old-world automakers and chooses the top-down approach for its product launches: Tesla entered the market with the high-priced, high-performance Model S luxury sedan. The S followed the Model X, a SUV with up to 800 hp and a six-figure amount. However, the market for such cars is a small one with about 17,400 vehicles in the third quarter of this year. The midsize car Model 3 has been 79,600 cars. With the vehicle, Tesla has entered capital-intensive mass production. Mengem sales and brings in good business profits. Model 3 will show if Tesla is winner or loser.
In the summer of 2017, the Model 3 was introduced in four variants in the American market. Because the model called Standard RangePlus has ten percent more range than standard model, more acceleration and higher top speed, but the price difference is only about $ 2,300, the Plus variant sold six times more than the standard model. "For this reason, the standard range plus was introduced as a basic version in Europe directly," says Tesla spokesman Samy Abdel Aal. In Europe, model 3 has been available since February of this year, and the model family has also been introduced according to the top-down principle: starting with the more expensive vehicles, the modelsPerformance and Maximum Range. In July, Standard Range Plus followed, the variant that is supposed to make bulk.
409 kilometers range - theoretically
The smallest Tesla is strong and fast with an output of 306 hp and a top speed of 225 kilometers per hour. The car has a rear-wheel drive engine, the other two versions have four-wheel drive and two engines. The battery capacity is 55 kWh, the theoretical range is 409 kilometers, in fact it is up to 380 kilometers. In the standard equipment, the car costs 44,390 euros. Teslas is exclusively bought online on the company's website. It takes five minutes and takes five clicks. Car parking is not easier. With a surcharge exterior color and interior and a autopilot with special features, the vehicle comes to a maximum of 54,820 euros.
The Model 3 is produced in the US, then shipped on the ship to Zeebrugge in Belgium. From there the cars come to the European delivery centers. They are all preconfigured vehicles whose delivery time depends on the equipment. "We have very few configuration options, which speeds up the delivery process," says Tesla spokesman Abdel Aal. A standard option vehicle, if ordered today, is expected to be delivered in February 2020. You can live with that.
And the Model 3 is a good choice. Optically sporty, comfortably comfortable space on the inside. On the dashboard, there is not a single switch and instrument display. Central information source and operating instrument is the large touch screen. Mechanically, only two levers are on the steering wheel: right for switching the automatic and for the autopilot, the left for flashing and for the windscreen wiper. As frightening as the dashboard looks at first sight, the car is surprisingly easy to drive straight away.
Can VW follow suit?
The little Tesla is great fun - and fast charged: With a battery level of 20 percent remaining capacity, the battery is filled within 25 minutes to 80 percent. Within this spectrum, charging is the fastest and the cells of the battery are the least stressed. A battery charge of 0 to 90 percent takes 45 minutes and costs € 16.83 for the Supercharger, Tesla's own charging system. The costs for the fuel of a burner are twice as high on the same route length. With this battery charge, the car came 250 kilometers in the test. It was driven on freeways maximum 100km / h. At higher speeds, the range drops extremely.
That will not be different with the electric Volkswagen ID.3. WieTesla in Model 3 offers three different battery capacities. Their theoretical ranges are between 330 and 550 kilometers, at Tesla they are between 409 and 560 kilometers. The smallest VW has in the basic version with 150 hp half as much power as the Tesla and is with almost 30,000 euros significantly cheaper. However, this financial advantage could melt through the long and expensive list of options, which is common in German manufacturers neatly merge. DenID.3 does not yet provide Volkswagen with test drives, so the comparison is so far theoretical.
With theModel 3 Standard Range Plus, there is now an affordable electric car from the pioneer of electromobility. The car is worth every penny, because Tesla also shows in the cheap version that they deliver technology at a high level. That's what VW has to do first to be competitive.
