Other plans

The Alcazaba of Almeria on the historical center of the city.

The VII Festival of Movie Dishes of the city coincides with many culinary events in the final stretch of his reign as Capital of Spanish Gastronomy

Almeria faces the final stretch as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2019 . For ten months, the Andalusian coastal town has carried out a vertiginous agenda full of activities, courses, workshops, conferences, talks and conferences to publicize its rich gastronomy, in which the vegetables of its greenhouses (Almería is known like "the garden of Europe") and the best ingredients from the Mediterranean Sea are protagonists. Those interested in discovering Almería with bites still have the possibility to participate in several culinary events that will take place from here at the end of the year. We propose three plans to enjoy local cuisine along with its rich heritage and one of its historical traditions, cinema.

After the movie dishes

The kitchen and the cinema shake hands one more year in the VII edition of the Almeria Movie Dishes Festival 2019. From November 15 to 24, 31 bars and restaurants in the city will prepare a series of dishes (most for no more 8 euros) with the title of a movie. The inspiration of the chefs will be tapes mostly made in the province (Almería has historically been the site of great Hollywood filming). Attendees can get a primer at participating establishments to get the stamp of each tasting. There will be prizes for those who have at least three prints. Among the 31 places that are part of this gastronomic route, organized by the Association of Hospitality of Almeria ASHAL, are Hotel Catedral ( Cathedral Square, 8), with Patton (bimi worlds with red desert foam); the Casco Antiguo restaurant (Jovellanos, s / n), with Sangre y arena (oxtail in its juice); Auditorio Bar (Av. Del Mediterráneo, 3), with the Terror dish in Chernobyl (Iberian hamburger), or La Plazuela Gastrobar (Real, s / n), with Pirates of the Caribbean II (grilled octopus leg with paprika cream ). More information and list of restaurants in www.ashal.es.

After the spoon dishes

Throughout the year, the main protagonists of Almeria cuisine have had a month dedicated to them, such as red shrimp, raf tomato or local wines. November is the month of the spoon dishes and the most emblematic stews of Almeria cuisine, among which are the Broth Burned (fish and dried pepper), the wheat pot (with chickpeas and wheat grain), the chard esparragás or the famous gurullos (a flour paste with rabbit and snails or with octopus and cuttlefish). Various workshops, tastings and showcookings will be held around them, and many restaurants will feature their specialties on their menus.

Among the activities: the headquarters of Almería 2019 (Pº de Almería, 12) will receive the Association of Seniors of the University of Almería to cook a spoon dish on Thursday, November 21, while the emblematic Mercado Central (1892) will host La simmering , two demonstrations of spoon stews, open to the public, on November 26 and 27. Restaurants such as Entresabores (Av. Del Mediterráneo, s / n) will bet this month on one of the most traditional recipes in the region: the Almeriense wheat pot with Serín blood sausage, fennel and knuckle.

Behind the covers

Tapear is one of the most entrenched traditions in Almería.Photo: Almería 2019 Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2019

The tapas are in the DNA of Almeria, in fact, the route of the top of the city has been declared of Andalusian Tourist Interest by the Junta de Andalucía (throughout the year, the City Council conducts guided itineraries; information on www.turismodealmeria.org). The old town of Almeria is one of the busiest places to practice this culinary art. Among the emblematic (and touristic) enclaves of the Central Market, the Cathedral of the Encarnación (imposing building with a 16th-century fortress structure) and the Alcazaba (fortress from the middle of the 10th century on the hill of San Cristóbal), there is a crowd of premises with their creations based on fish, seafood, meat, poultry and, of course, vegetables. An indisputable reference is Casa Puga (Jovellanos, 7), a mythical tavern opened in 1870. Its fried cheese stands out. Also El Jurelico (Jovellanos, 14), with its cod in jetty with seaweed from the west; the tavern Nuestra Tierra (Jovellanos, 28), with its ration of raf tomatoes with anchovies, or the La Encina restaurant (Marín, 16).

Another very fashionable area for tapas is Zapillo, an old fishing district and today one of the most populated in the capital, especially by university students. Located to the south of the city, one of its charms is the promenade on the beach. There are Entremares Zapillo (Stadium, 2), with its fish (tuna burgers and dried octopus stand out), Los Angeles bar (Carabineros Square, 1), specializing in grilled fish, or La Jungla gastrobar ( Av. Del Mediterráneo, 13) and its gourmet tartar cones lid.
