German Ambassador thanks the USSR for its contribution to the fall of the Berlin Wall

The German Ambassador to Russia, Geza Andreas von Geir, at a festive event in Moscow on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, thanked the USSR for helping to accept the peaceful revolution in the German Democratic Republic in 1989.

“We will always be grateful to the Soviet Union for the fact that in November 1989 it did not interfere and did not impede the peaceful revolution in the GDR,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

The German ambassador noted the decisive role of the USSR in the fall of the Berlin Wall and peaceful changes in the GDR.

“And today we need to be careful, even if we disagree on important issues so as not to compare today's challenges with the heavy burden that the peoples of Europe had to bear during the Cold War,” said von Geir.

Earlier, former US Secretary of State James Baker said that the fall of the Berlin Wall was unexpected for US intelligence.
