  • Facial recognition: Google suspends a facial recognition study that supposedly employed the homeless

Google today presented its Pixel 4 in New York along with other new devices. In spite of how interesting its catalog is, without a doubt the great product of the day is its mobile, because year after year they have shone in the photographic section with their phones.

Although for now we have not been able to test the camera in depth, we already have all the confirmed information about the device. These are its technical characteristics:

  • Display : 5.7 (Pixel 4) and 6.3 inch OLED (Pixel 4 XL)
  • Dynamic refresh technology (60Hz / 90Hz)
  • Radar Soli for facial unlocking and gestures
  • CPU : Snapdragon 855
  • RAM : 6GB
  • Storage : 64 / 128GB
  • Battery : 2,800 (Pixel 4) and 3,700 mAh (Pixel 4XL)
  • Colors : White, black (both), orange (Pixel 4)
  • Prices : Pixel 4 from 759 euros, Pixel 4XL from 899 euros

With this on the table, two things stand out: the launch price is lower than in its direct predecessors and its battery may be somewhat short, especially if we take into account the complex technologies it uses for its screen and for facial unlocking.

Well, it also highlights that they are ugly: in contrast to the latest Huawei or Samsung phones, the Pixel 4 lags far behind in the current trend of reducing frames and margins everywhere. And, personally, that it is not symmetrical at its edges is something as serious as having that thick top frame. Luckily it fulfills a function.

Be that as it may, from Google they assured us that the battery should last a whole day, and although the life of the Pixel 3 and, especially, the Pixel 3a is good, it was not comparable to other large phones with more milliamps in their batteries.

If we add to this the variable refreshment of the screen, that is, that it is more fluid when the phone considers that it should provide extra fluidity (scrolling in an application), the impact on its duration may be important.

It is appreciated that Google has introduced new technologies that are currently not available on other competing phones to get closer to that dream, yet to be fulfilled, to rival Apple as far as the iPhone is concerned.

The Pixel 4, no matter the model, have a radar, (Soli's radar, it's what they are called) to use a complex facial unlocking technology that is identical to Apple's Face ID. And since it is a radar, the phone knows its surroundings when it is active: it recognizes gestures to silence calls, to pass songs, to turn off the alarm clock ...

And when you're going to take hold of him, he literally knows that your hands and fingers are close and turns on the screen before you've taken it, so that the unlock is even faster.

But all these are accessory news to the cameras, which is where Google shines. The Pixel 4 have two cameras, because beyond the size of the battery and the screen, the two phones are identical in everything. And its hardware is not exceptional, 12 megapixels and 16 megapixels for the telephoto lens, but the software is still the best in the market.

Image processing is now done in what Google has called 'Pixel Neural Core', a processor outside the CPU that performs certain tasks, such as image processing. It is more advanced than the chip carried by its previous mobiles and, according to Google, it would allow capturing the night sky in every detail without the need for long exposure.

This function, together with the best face capture, the best blur effect and the quality of the photographs, we will have to wait to give our opinion, but everything that Google does in this regard is usually imitated in some way by the surprising of your results The Pixels were the first phones to make a Night Mode as we know it now and that they have imitated from Samsung to Huawei, also passing through Apple, so the results may be surprising.

The Pixel 4, like its predecessors, are rare mobiles that do not stand out for their design or their gross performance, but that include certain identity details and software features that usually propel it above other brands that do stand out in those sections.

It is a pity that Google is unable to create an attractive design for its devices, although I am very fan of the matte finish of its back and the contract that they wanted to create between the edge of the device, black in the white and orange model. However, those edges above and below have no name, not so much because they do not fulfill a function (because the radar and the camera demand their space) but because they are badly compensated.

Despite this, the Pixel 4 are phones that generate a lot of curiosity and we will test as soon as we have the opportunity, so if you are interested, keep an eye on what we will be publishing about them in the coming days.
