Danny Noppert failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix on Wednesday. The Frisian went 2-3 in Dublin against the Englishman Nathan Aspinall.
28-year-old Noppert was 2-1 in sets, but then gave up that lead. In the last two sets, Aspinall, the number twelve in the world ranking, only dropped one leg.
Jermaine Wattimena will play in the second round later on Wednesday. 'The Machine Gun' plays against Peter Wright.
Earlier Michael van Gerwen reached the quarterfinals in the Irish capital at the expense of his countryman Jeffrey de Zwaan. The reigning world champion will meet Mervyn King on Thursday.
Van Gerwen is looking forward to his fifth overall win, after winning the tournament in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Raymond van Barneveld did not qualify for the World Grand Prix and is not participating in the tournament for the first time since 2005.
The World Grand Prix differs from other tournaments because the darters must start and end each leg with a double.
