Pablo Rivero plays Tony Williams in 'The Servant'.

The actor, popularly known for his work on the series 'Tell me how it happened', stars in a contemporary classic signed by Robin Maugham

With the class struggle as a backdrop, 'The Servant' delves into the twisted relationship that an aristocrat and his servant maintain

The last time Pablo Rivero (Madrid, 1980) was about to premiere at the Spanish Theater he suffered an injury that forced him to cancel his plans at the last moment. Now, the actor, popularly known for his role as Toni Alcántara in Tell Me How It Happened , removes that "pinned thorn" with his role as Tony Williams in The Servant while still shooting the episodes of the new season of the series. Based on the text of the homonymous theatrical version that the British Robin Maugham made of his own novel, the montage, in which he shares a poster with Eusebio Poncela, puts on the stage the twisted relationship of dependence and submission between a young aristocrat and his servant .

Rivero says he is grateful that this opportunity reaches his 38 years and not his 20. "Probably, at that age I would have been blocked. At that time Pablo would tell him to trust that things come, to continue working conscientiously, being responsible but, perhaps, that at some point I have more nose. For me, the priority now is to enjoy . It is so much responsibility that you have no choice but to work to enjoy it. "

How did it get into the skin of this character? When I face a new character, I try not to have any prejudice or previous idea. In this case, I had the problem or the advantage that I had seen the movie that was made based on the work. I didn't have it much in the retina, but I did remember some of the frames. I read the text several times, I let myself soak. I especially like working with the directors. The greatest purpose is to feel that I have given what they expected of me, or more. I try to work from listening, taking into account the proposal of Mireia [Gabilondo] and that of the whole team, also trying to be faithful to the atmosphere, to the duality between the characters: everyone has a double face. Within the costumbrismo and the reality of something that has to be familiar, we want there to be something enigmatic and mysterious. The class struggle that is on stage, can it be extrapolated to the present? The work is very timeless. The theme is fully applicable to any relationship, including work or, often, sentimental. The text speaks of very real, very tangible things. Things that you recognize easily and, at the same time, also refer to that darkness that we carry inside, to the rejection of norms, to what is established and to the true nature of oneself. A nature that many of the characters in the play have been denied. In the case of Barret, the servant, he is much more valid than Tony, but he has always been told that it had to be otherwise. He has been denied his own nature. What is the theater for? Theater is not simply leisure, it is a parenthesis in which you sit and move to another reality. In this world where you go to full milk, that is a privilege. It has that power to make the public forget but, deep down, it does so by sending very important messages. In the end, theater is life. That's why we have to protect him. After almost two decades on the grid, many continue to associate his name with that of his character in Tell Me . Does it bother you? The issue of typecasting has never bothered me. When I was just a year in Tell Me, some were telling me that I had to go because I was going to be pigeonholed. Almost 18 years have passed and today I have a trajectory that I am happy with, with ups and downs, of course, but that shows me that the characters I have made do not resemble each other. Rarely have I been called to do what I do in the series. In 2017 he made a break to publish his first novel. When do you know that it is time to set aside and in the literature, as in the theater, you have to have a lot of dedication. You can't be halfway. You have to be at 1,000%. And enjoy the processes. If I am not going to enjoy something, I prefer not to.
