Surfers on the beach of El Palmar.

Taking advantage of the autumn tidal waves, we propose a tour of the most interesting spots to catch waves, from Tarifa to Chiclana de la Frontera

When vacationers leave the coast of Cádiz, it is the surfers who take their beaches, already empty and silent, taking advantage of the beginning of the season of good waves thanks to the appearance of the storm surge and the strong winds that blow from the ocean Atlantic. There are many national and international professionals (and also amateurs) who approach the easternmost part of the Costa de La Luz (east of Cádiz capital) to practice their favorite sport. From the windy Tarifa to Chiclana de la Frontera there are some of the best surfing destinations (most easily accessible and with the presence of surf schools to rent the equipment or receive lessons), which also still keep their waters warm and pleasant ambient temperatures. We discover where to find the best waves.

Known as the European Wind Capital, the city located in the Strait of Gibraltar is the mecca of windsurfers and kitesurfers due to the strong winds that blow throughout most of the year, but there is also room for surfers , especially on the beaches of El Balneario (west of the port), very exposed and with big and strong waves, only for the most skilled, and the nearby Valdevaqueros .

Between Barbate and Conil

The paradisiacal Caños de Meca.

About 25 km separate these two locations - between them, the Natural Park of the Cape of Trafalgar with its renowned lighthouse -, in which there are four sandy beaches of enormous international demand for surfers. The beach of La Hierbabuena , nestled in the Natural Park of La Breña and Marismas del Barbate, is surrounded by pine forests and consists of dunes of fine golden sand. It has a rocky bottom and, according to experts, in adequate conditions, it presents a wave of rights of a considerable size, known as "the right of Andalusia", and of the best surfers in the region. From there, through a signposted path of 7.5 km over the cliff, you reach the neighboring beach of Los Caños de Meca (also accessible by car). Like the previous one, it has a rock bottom, but the wave breaks from the left. You have to wait for the fall / winter season to surf in it, since in summer it is difficult to find good waves. Both are considered spots for experienced.

Nearby is El Palmar , the authentic mecca of surfers, with an extension of 4 km. It has numerous shops and surf schools and presents waves that can reach up to three meters, especially in autumn, with east winds. It is the most recurring and frequented surfing point in all of Andalusia, since when in other nearby places it is practically impossible to ride a wave, there conditions are usually ideal (from October to January). Very close, Los Bateles , the urban beach of Conil, at the mouth of the Salado River, is perfect to start surfing, since, in it, sand bars provide long-distance waves. It is also a good location for windsurfing and kite surfing.

On the way to Chiclana

La Roche , just outside Conil, is one of the most frequent waves in the province of Cádiz. With a sandy bottom, at high tide, these are fast, tube-shaped, break on the shore (the famous Roche shore) and require a lot of skill to surf it.

Another of the most popular beaches is La Barrosa , in Chiclana, located between the islet of Sancti-Petri and the Torre del Puerco. The most virgin part of its eight kilometers, full of dunes and clear waters, offers waves to the east and southwest. The best time to practice the sport is when the north wind blows. In general, it is perfect to start in it during the summer, since the area has shallow bottoms and moderate waves. On the contrary, in autumn, the place hosts more expert surfers.

Cádiz capital

For beginners in this discipline who, in addition, prefer to be in a more urban environment, the city of Cádiz has two beaches that are not dangerous with gentle waves: Santa María del Mar and La Victoria , both with a multitude of services (ticket offices, shops rental of equipment, schools ...). A little further away is La Cortadura , an area with abundant vegetation and dunes, which even in summer surfers frequent.
