Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée put themselves back in the shoes of Jean-Louis and Anne.

The French director takes up in 'The most beautiful years of a life' the love story that marked an entire generation with 'A man and a woman'

In 1966, Claude Lelouch (Paris, 1937) premiered A man and a woman , a film that caught viewers for their risky aesthetic bet and the portrait of a passionate love between two widowers. Those characters played by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée dazzled the audience and critics and made the film be awarded at the Cannes Film Festival with the Golden Palm and won the Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and the Non-English Speaking Movie.

Now, long after and after a sequel that did not succeed released in 1986, Trintignant, with 88 years, and Aimée, with 87 years, return to his characters. In the most beautiful years of a life , Jean-Louis and Anne return to face each other in a nursing home, the place where he remains held due to his advanced Alzheimer's, which prevents him from remembering few things, except the love for Anne

Was it difficult to convince Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée to resume their characters more than half a century later? They were very afraid of touching a mythical tape, considered by some to be something sacred. Both Jean-Louis and Anouk thought that one should not touch such a well-known story that made people dream in so many places. And how did you get it? I am very superstitious, so I convinced them with a very original argument. I told them that if they were alive at this time, like me, it was not by chance, but that we had a duty to follow that story and resume it. The three of us are at an age where everything can be said, since we have a long experience behind us. I am one of those who think that you can only talk about life if you have lived it. In addition, I promised that, if things went well, we would release the film in theaters. And if not ... it would be something we would do for ourselves and that only our families and friends would see. I think the result is something done by pure love of cinema, which breaks with everything and is a miracle. It has always been that way throughout my career. Do you consider yourself a survivor? Of course. I, like the actors in this film, have had a very complicated life. And now much more. Jean-Louis, who at the time lost two children, is now almost blind and can barely walk. And, what is worse, I didn't want to do more movies before shooting this tape. For his part, Anouk has had many family concerns and, especially, with the men he related to, who are now all dead. So imagine what someone like me may have lived, who has had seven children with five different women (laughs).

So, what was the objective when launching yourself to this project? Share part of what we have lived with those who are afraid to live. Life is an obstacle course and happiness is the art of eliminating things that really bother you. With the most beautiful years ... I intend to talk about essential things and show that cinema invented immortality. When I see on the screen great actors who have died, I think they are alive. In the story, the first encounter between the protagonists lasts for almost 20 minutes ... That conversation between Anne and Jean-Louis is the heart of the film. I thought that if it didn't work, nothing that comes next would be worth it. There is everything I wanted to tell. And I saw that love appeared in images. I have never been so afraid behind a camera. Nor have I been so happy to finish filming a scene. What do you think is due to the success achieved by a man and a woman and the long-standing fame? As a filmmaker and as a man, I have given my life to love and I have loved so much. So that tape shows that I have always paid close attention to listening to women, who are the ones in charge of the theme of love. To men, and also to women, love forces us to improve and I wanted to show a man and a woman in love. Although it sounds strange, I just wanted that ... And I've continued on that search for the rest of my career

An immortal love

In A man and a woman , Anne and Jean-Louis lived a passionate love story . His characters, both widowers, meet when their children coincide in the same school. Their past lives, shown in flashbacks, and the conversations they held today gave rise to beautiful scenes in different tones in which the icing was put on by the unforgettable soundtrack composed by Francis Lai.
