Major telephone brands often present their new top devices at their own events. But there were still some new smartphones at the IFA technology fair in Berlin. These were the most striking.

TCL Plex

The Chinese TCL has brand names like BlackBerry and Alcatel, but showed its first device under its own brand name at the IFA: the TCL Plex.

The Plex is a midrange telephone with a price of 329 euros. The device will be released this summer. The device has three camera lenses on the back. A standard 48-megapixel sensor, a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 2-megapixel lens for low-light photos.

At the front, the device has a 6.5-inch LCD screen with a hole in the top left corner for the camera and a thin border at the bottom.

Foldable telephone from TCL

The brand also showed a new concept of a folding telephone during the presentation. This device will not be on the market for the time being, but it shows that TCL is thinking about this type of mobile solution.

The model that was shown at IFA had an elongated screen on the inside and could be folded shut like a wallet. The side of the fold was a lot thicker than the other side. Also a piece of screen protruded at the top, possibly to show notifications.

LG G8X ThinQ with Dual Screen

LG does not have folding phones, but it did present the LG G8X ThinQ. This phone offers a 6.4 inch OLED screen and two cameras on the back, one of which is a wide-angle lens.

The phone can be clicked into a case to connect a second screen. This is useful if, for example, two apps have to be placed next to each other or if the user wants to play games.

Motorola One Zoom

Lenovo announced the Motorola One Zoom, the newest addition to the Motorola One series. The phone stands out because of the four camera lenses on the back. In addition to a standard lens, the phone has a wide-angle lens, a depth sensor and a telephoto lens. This allows optical zooms up to three times (without loss of quality).

A luminous Motorola logo is placed under the lenses. A fingerprint scanner is available behind the screen. The device is competitively priced at 429 euros. The Motorola One Zoom has a 4,000 mAh battery, a 6.4 inch OLED screen, a Snapdragon 675 processor (not the most powerful chip) and 4GB of memory.

F (x) tec Pro1

For those who still crave a physical keyboard, there is the F (x) tec Pro1. This smartphone has a keyboard that can be extended from the rear. The user runs the device in landscape mode and can then type using physical keys.

The phone has a 6 inch screen and a somewhat outdated Snapdragon 835 from Qualcomm. There is 6 GB of memory, a 3,200 mAh battery and a headphone connection. The Pro1 is also equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

The smartphone will cost 650 euros if it appears in October.

Nokia 2720 Flip

The most striking phone at the modest stand of HMD Global this year was the Nokia 2720 Flip. In recent years, the company has released classic Nokia phones with a modern twist, this time it's the flip phone.

The original Nokia 2720 came on the market ten years ago. Now the device is back, with 4G and apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Typing works with a T9 keyboard, just like in the old days. This phone is not an alternative to a high-quality smartphone, but with a price of 90 euros a fun retro choice.
