The iPhone leak that Google brought out on August 29 may affect more devices than expected. According to anonymous sources from Forbes involved in the case, Android smartphones and Windows PCs were also susceptible to espionage.
The same websites that have infected many iPhone models that were equipped with iOS 10 up to and including iOS 12 with malware in the past two years had also provided it for Android and Windows devices, according to Forbes . The sources suspect that the leaks were used by the Chinese government to spy on the Uighur minority in the country.
What kind of malware was installed on these devices is still unclear.
The iPhone leak enabled attackers to view app databases, including WhatsApp, Telegram and Message conversations, and emails in mail apps. It affected the models iPhone 5s to X. Smartphones that have been updated to iOS 12.4.1 are no longer vulnerable to the malware.
Methods adapted to other smartphone usage Uighurs
The attackers are said to have adapted their methods and targets to the changing smartphone usage of the Uighur population, says a source from Forbes on Sunday. The news platform was unable to find out whether websites specifically targeting Uighurs were used to spread the malware.
The Uyghurs are an ethnic minority in China. According to independent researchers, about 1.5 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities live in detention camps in China.
