WhatsApp has added through a protection update by fingerprint or facial recognition to its application, so, if activated, the chats would have a second layer of protection on mobile phones .

In other words, to access a person's messages, it would be necessary to unlock their phone and also unlock the WhatsApp application, separately.

The unlocking by fingerprint or facial recognition was advanced last January, when WhatsApp was performing the first tests among its 'testers', users who test the app's new options ahead of time.

IPhone users had this new option since February, but those who use Android have had to wait until this week to activate it.

The new security measure is available on both Android (version 2.19.221 onwards) and iOS (version 2.19.20 onwards) and is, together with two-step verification and end-to-end encryption, one of the most important security measures that WhatsApp has implemented.

How to activate the fingerprint lock in WhatsApp

To activate WhatsApp protection by fingerprint or facial recognition , it is necessary to follow the following steps:

  • Enter WhatsApp and access 'Settings'. On Android phones, the icon is in the upper right corner, while on iPhones, it is in the lower right
  • Once there, you have to access the 'Account' menu and, within this menu, go to the 'Privacy' option.
  • When the new menu is displayed, you have to go down to the last option, called 'Fingerprint lock' on Android devices or 'Screen lock' on iPhones.
  • Within this new menu, you must activate and configure the new security option. Depending on the device, it will be necessary to register the fingerprint or, in more modern iPhones with FaceID, allow the app to access the data of our face that stores the phone. It is also possible to configure how long it will take WhatsApp to request the fingerprint or the user's face once it is unlocked.
