Google has announced on a help page that YouTube Kids will appear in website form later this week. The child-friendly version of YouTube was only available via a separate app on Android and iOS.
Only child-friendly videos can be seen on the YouTube Kids platform, such as cartoons, children's songs and educational videos. The offer is selected by YouTube. Users cannot upload videos to YouTube Kids themselves.
YouTube also makes a new distribution for the ages of children, which determines the video offerings for the target groups. First there was only a group for young children (up to eight years) and for older children (from 8 to 12 years).
From now on there are three age categories: up to 4 years, from 5 to 7 years and from 8 to 12 years. For example, the youngest group can only watch movies that stimulate creativity and play. Older children can also watch videos about computer games and music videos.
YouTube Kids was criticized in the past. In the US, for example, advertisements were shown that did not comply with advertising guidelines for children. Offensive videos appeared on the platform in 2017. In it, well-known cartoon characters fought each other and they could see how they committed suicide. Measures were taken for this.
In the US, the FTC regulator investigated whether this had broken rules. A settlement would have been made, although the outcome is unknown. TechCrunch writes that the website for YouTube Kids is probably part of the agreement with the FTC.
