On August 17, 2009, the largest man-made disaster in the history of Russian hydropower occurred at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station. Due to damage to hydraulic unit No. 2, water poured from the turbine crater into the engine room under high pressure. As a result, building structures partially collapsed, power and auxiliary equipment failed. The destruction at the station resulted in the death of 75 people, the leak of more than 40 tons of engine oil in the Yenisei and the disconnection of a number of industrial and social facilities from the power supply. An investigation by Rostekhnadzor showed that the cause of the disaster was the destruction of the studs of the turbine cover of the hydraulic unit, which was preceded by the formation of fatigue damage. According to Sergei Shoigu, then head of the Ministry of Emergencies, the accident was unique - nothing like this was observed in world practice.
