Developers of games released on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch must state the chances of winning items from so-called loot boxes, if the game contains the virtual treasure chests.
The makers of the game consoles, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, have promised to apply this policy to their game computers, reports the American industry organization ESA on its website on Wednesday. The requirement is expected to enter into force in 2020.
Loot boxes are virtual treasure chests with which players of games can win extra items or extensions, among other things. The mechanism is controversial: the Dutch Gaming Authority, among others, says that elements of lottery boxes look like gambling.
The virtual treasuries can often be purchased directly or indirectly for real money and contain rare items. In many cases it is not known how big the chance of winning is at a certain price, but not every game publisher makes this known in his games.
Activision Blizzard, Bandai Namco, Bethesda, Bungie, Electronic Arts (EA), Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. and Wizards of the Coast have promised to give more openness by 2020 at the latest about chances of winning prizes from lottery boxes in their games.
