Volkswagen and Ford will deepen their cooperation. The two car companies will concentrate on autonomous driving and on electric cars, they say on Friday.

As part of the plans, Volkswagen is investing $ 2.6 billion (€ 2.3 billion) in Argo AI, a company that develops technology for self-driving vehicles. Earlier, Ford already invested nearly 900 million euros in the tech company.

The common goal is to develop what manufacturers simply call the Self-Driving System , or SDS. This system must play a major role in both future Ford and Volkswagens models. The two manufacturers emphasize that these models become entirely their own products.

In addition, Ford will use the MEB platform for electric cars from Volkswagen. The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.3 also uses this platform. The German brand had previously indicated that it wanted to share this platform.

The first Volkswagen-based electric Ford is due to roll off in 2023 in Cologne. The Americans want to deliver at least 600,000 MEB vehicles.
