First aid race participants tried to resuscitate the 21-year-old runner who was feeling unwell, and then the emergency services quickly arrived, but it was too late.

A 21-year-old rider died on Saturday after suffering a malaise as he ran the Mont-Saint-Michel half-marathon, AFP told organizers. "The young man made a cardiorespiratory stop around 12:30 at the 20th km," said AFP Thomas Delpeuch, head of events for Amaury Sport Organization (ASO). Originally from Côtes-d'Armor, he ran his first half-marathon with a friend.

Participants in the race trained in first aid tried to resuscitate him, then quickly the emergency services arrived, but it was too late. "The discomfort is very frequent on this type of events, and even with a medical certificate, there is always a risk," said Thomas Delpeuch.

The race was not interrupted

The race was not interrupted. "It would be dangerous to stop runners at points where they can not be supported," he said. The marathon, scheduled for Sunday, has also been maintained. The five events organized during the weekend (trail, 10km, half marathon, marathon, marathon duo) welcome 10,000 people from France and abroad.
