On May 25, 1989, the First Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR began its work in Moscow. For the first time in the country's history, elections to the highest authority were held on an alternative basis. During the meetings, a permanent legislative, regulatory and supervisory body - the Supreme Council was elected, an opposition - the Inter-regional deputy group was created. More than 2,000 delegates from all the republics of the Soviet Union took part in the work of the congress, one of the most representative in composition in the entire history of Russia. This was a turning point in the process of the removal of the CPSU from power, the collapse of the USSR and the country's transition to the market economy, experts say.
