From a pistol to rocket complexes: 105 years since the birth of Nikolai Makarov

On May 22, 1914, prominent Soviet designer Nikolai Makarov was born in Sasov, Ryazan Region. In 1936, he entered the Tula Mechanical Institute. During the Great Patriotic War, a young engineer worked at a defense plant in Zagorsk and Vyatskiye Polyany, where he went from a master to a leading designer. Then, in TsKB-14 in Tula, Makarov created several samples of new military equipment and small arms: the 9-mm PM, the Fagot and Konkurs anti-tank missile systems, the AM-23 aircraft cannon. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor, twice became the winner of the USSR State Prize.
