A 14-year-old youth soccer player has succumbed to his severe head injuries after a collision with an opponent. The accident occurred on November 11. According to a media report, the duel occurred shortly before the end of the game at the height of the centre circle. The player of the DJK TuS Körne from Dortmund remained motionless afterwards, Körne coach Jürgen Peter told the »Ruhr-Nachrichten« on Monday.
He had tried to resuscitate him until the emergency doctor arrived. A few days later, 14-year-old Irvin died in the hospital. "We are stunned and deeply saddened by Irvin's death; It leaves us infinitely sad and powerless. We already miss his friendly nature and his smile and the void left by Irvin cannot be filled," Körne had previously written on Facebook. We can't comprehend that football, which gives us all so much and which Irvin loved so much, takes a child out of our midst."
Great sympathy throughout Dortmund
Out of consideration for the family, the club waited a few days to publish the news. In addition, the events were discussed with the team, parents, pastors and the club management. Jürgen Peter resigned from his post, saying he was too shocked by the accident. The second chairman, Stefan Junge, said that the club wanted to support the family, friends and teammates.
Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund also expressed their condolences, writing on social media on Sunday: "The entire Dortmund football family is shocked and deeply saddened. Our thoughts are with the family and all loved ones." At the weekend, there was a minute's silence in Dortmund at some youth matches. A fundraising campaign for the player's family has raised over €16,000 to date.
