Canada won the gold in Tokyo 2021 after a dramatic penalty shootout against Sweden in the final. Tonight, they took the first step to defend the gold after beating Jamaica 2-1 in Toronto. Last Friday they won in Kingston 2-0.
"I've been thinking about this game ever since the World Cup ended and everyone has gone up a gear to achieve this," head coach Bev Priestman said.
The team celebrated afterwards by singing with DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win" and Beyonce's "Run "The World Girls".
Jamaica knocked out Brazil in the World Cup
Canada was surprisingly eliminated already in the group stage of the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia where 32 teams participated. Jamaica made a sensation and went to eighth after knocking out Brazil in the group stage.
"We have a lot of hard work to do but the goal is to reach the podium again, but as we saw in the World Championships, it will be tougher than ever," predicts Priestman.
In doing so, they join their neighbour USA to take one of only twelve places in the tournament in Paris.
