The 31-year-old started as a multi-athlete but switched to short sprint and especially 200 meters. She took bronze at the World Championships in 2013 and gold in 2015 and 2017.
"As an athlete, you know that this day is coming, that at a certain time, your career is going to end," Schippers wrote.
After the straight World Cup golds in 2015 and 2017, his career was hampered by injuries. The last medal she won was a silver in the 60 metres at the 2019 European Indoor Championships.
"Today I have decided to end my career as an athlete and embrace what can now wait. At the same time, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported me. It has been a journey without regretting anything," writes Skipers, who also won an Olympic silver medal in 2016.
The extensive injuries meant that she did not compete for the past year.
