Scandal scenes unfolded in and around the Johan Cruyff Arena yesterday. At 3-0 down, it boiled over for the Ajax fans who started throwing Bengals onto the field, whereupon the game was forced to be called off. Even after the game, it was messy and police were forced to use tear gas against the fans.
"This type of behaviour is not part of Ajax," the club said in a statement.
"Even the supporters are victims in this"
The match will resume at 14:00 on Wednesday. Ajax's match against FC Volendam, which was to be played on Wednesday, has been postponed. A decision both teams oppose.
"The league and cup program for four teams are now forced to be changed by the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) due to the completion of a single cancelled match. Not only the clubs but also the supporters are victims in this," Ajax wrote.
Volendam is also not unanimous in the decision and has said that they are investigating their (legal) rights.
Amsterdam police have said that some of the home supporters tried to break into the stadium compound after the game.
