The player of Zaraobe and youth of Baskonia Iván Sáez de Cortázar, 32 years old has died when colliding head-on with a truck, whose occupant has been slightly injured in an incident registered on Tuesday on the A-624 road at the height of the municipality of Amurrrio and in the direction of Vitoria, reported the Ertzaintza.

The accident occurred minutes before four o'clock this afternoon at kilometer point 35.9 of the A-624 road at the height of the municipality of Amurrio -near the Bideko restaurant- and in the direction of Vitoria. In the same have been involved two vehicles, a truck and a car, which have collided head-on.

The former Baskonia academy player played as a center in Zaraobe and came to play in the fourth division of Spanish basketball. Sáez de Cortázar, who also worked in a daycare center, had a wife and a child.

The Steilas union has denounced that the player was a worker of the Haurreskolak Consortium who was returning from work. This central considers that this death is a work death "in itinere", which is why, together with other unions such as LAB, ESK, EHNE and Hiru, it will hold a protest rally this Friday at the headquarters of the Haurreskolak Consortium in Eibar (Gipuzkoa).

"We want to denounce the risk suffered daily by the workers of the Haurreskolak Consortium, as well as other educational sectors due to mobility and the precariousness that this entails," said Steilas.

This central has advocated "analyzing in depth the mobility that occurs in the education sector to reduce displacements" and avoid these accidents.
