Borussia Dortmund started the Champions League season with a deserved defeat. BVB lost 0-2 (0-0) at Paris Saint-Germain and had little to oppose the star ensemble from Paris.
BVB started with a defensive starting line-up. With Niclas Süle, Mars Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck, there were three central defenders in defence, but coach Edin Terzic did without both Niclas Füllkrug and Sebastien Haller in attack.
After eleven minutes, the coach had to make the next change: Marcel Sabitzer left the pitch with an injury and Felix Nmecha came on for him.
After a cautious start, PSG had the first big chance to take the lead in the 19th minute, but Vitinha hit the inside post with a long-range shot, from where the ball bounced back into the field. On the other side, Emre Can also tried a long-range shot, but he missed the target by a wide margin.
Hardly any PSG chances before the move
PSG had an impressive attack on the pitch, but Kylian Mbappé, Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele hardly had any chances despite clear field superiority and numerous corner kicks. Only once did BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel have to close the short corner against an Mbappé shot.
As a result, BVB survived the first half without any major problems. Niklas Süle got the ball on his arm in the penalty area in the 47th minute, there were penalties, although it was certainly not a deliberate handball. Mbappé converted ice-cold to make it 1-0.
Ten minutes later, the game was decided. Vitinha and ex-Dortmund player Achraf Hakimi combined in the 58th minute through the Black and Yellow defence, Hakimi gave Kobel no chance at the end.
Terzic reacted and brought on Füllkrug in attack for Donyell Malen. The Germany international made his first Champions League appearance at the age of 30. Marco Reus for Julian Brandt should also provide momentum after his substitution. PSG nevertheless kept the game under control.
It wasn't until Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was brought in that BVB got another sniff of the connecting goal, the young striker only hitting the far post. It remained the best opportunity for the guests.
BVB's next game is against AC Milan on 4 October and they are already under pressure in this game.
