Hamburger SV has moved into the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a lot of effort. The third-placed team in the second division only prevailed 4-3 (3-3, 1-1) in extra time at third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen. With less effort, Bundesliga newcomers 1. FC Heidenheim won 8-0 (5-0) at Oberliga club Rostocker FC.

In front of 18,800 spectators in the sold-out stadium on Hafenstraße, the Hanseatic team got off to a better start. After a mistake by RWE defender Jose-Henrique Rios Alonso, Bakery Jatta took the lead with a shot into the short corner in the 37th minute. Five minutes later, Torben Müsel equalised with a free-kick, with the midfielder benefiting from a hole in HSV's defensive wall.

After the change of sides, Jatta (54') brought his team back into the lead, but the hosts also countered immediately: With Moussa Doumboya (56'), Essen equalized the game for the second time. But even after the third deficit by Robert Glatzel (66th), the team of coach Christoph Dabrowski came back again, this time through Lucas Brumme (83rd) and forced extra time. The decisive goal was scored by László Bénes. The Slovakian was successful in the 117th minute with a deflected shot.

"That was bumpy football with too much negligence," said HSV sporting director Jonas Boldt on the Sky microphone. In the first three competitive games, HSV scored 11 goals – but also conceded eight goals.

Heidenheim without problems

Meanwhile, Bundesliga newcomers 1. FC Heidenheim have been in a goal-scoring mood a week before their debut in the German top flight and easily reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

Goalscorer Tim Kleindienst (12th/15th), Adrian Beck (9th) and Lennard Maloney (18th) overwhelmed the hosts with their goals within 18 minutes, the Heidenheimers were mercilessly effective against the state cup winners from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The additions Marvin Pieringer (38th/72nd), Eren Dinkci (53rd) and Stefan Schimmer (87th) further increased the result.
