Spain's Sergio Busquets will join Argentina's Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, the MLS club has announced.
After months of rumors, Inter Miami today released a video announcing Busquets' signing and containing quotes from soccer stars, such as Pep Guardiola and Luka Modric, who praise Messi's former Barcelona teammate.
After fifteen seasons in which he won 32 titles (9 Leagues, 7 Copas del Rey, 7 Spanish Super Cups, 3 Champions Leagues, 3 Club World Cups and 3 European Super Cups), Busquets, 34, recently announced that he was leaving Barcelona.
Busquets was not only an anchor in the center of the Barça field but also marked an era in the Spanish national team, with which he conquered the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.
The midfielder, who had developed his entire professional career in Barcelona, will debut abroad in the MLS with a Messi with whom he shared numerous triumphs with the Blaugrana shirt.
These two important reinforcements, which can be registered in the summer transfer window of the MLS that begins on July 5, will come in handy to an Inter Miami very much in need of help since, for now, it is last in the Eastern Conference with only 15 points in 17 games.
The Miami Herald, citing a source close to the negotiations, said Busquets will fill one of Inter Miami's three designated player spots.
The figure of the 'designated player', created by MLS in 2007 to bring David Beckham to the LA Galaxy, allows teams to circumvent salary caps to face certain signings of flash.
Busquets, who also had offers from Saudi Arabia for his football future beyond Barcelona, could have one more former Inter Miami teammate apart from Messi, as there have also been rumours in recent days that place the Florida team as a possible destination for Jordi Alba.
