Maja Åskag gave a real statement of form at an athletics gala in Copenhagen. She started with a jump measuring 6.27 meters and in the third jump she accounted for the best jump of the competition – 6.70 meters. That jump, on the other hand, was made in a 2.5 m/s strong tailwind – which means that it does not count as an official record.

In the fourth jump, Thunderstorm flew 6.66 meters, which is a personal best by a margin of six centimeters. Then in an approved wind (1.5 m/s).

"It was nice. I felt like I was interrupting hope, like I was dying out a bit. Nice with the season premiere now. I've only done one long jump session now since the indoor season, says the talent.

You broke records, then you usually do not hear that it feels like you died out?

"Okay, maybe I didn't die. But it wasn't as good a jump as 6.70, it was like the energy ran out. I did not push out the landing to the fullest.

Focuses on triple jump

Thunderstorm jumped 2021.6 meters in 80, but even that jump was in too strong a tailwind.

The 20-year-old has also shown fine form in the triple jump. At the end of May, she jumped 14.00 meters. This is also where the most focus lies going forward.

"We're focusing a little more on the triple jump. I want to run cross-country as well, but a little more focus on the triple jump," says Åskag.

Second in Copenhagen was Icelandic Irma Gunnarsdottir. Third place was German Lucie Kienast.

The Swedish record is held by Erica Johansson and it is 6.99 meters.
