Former Dutch national soccer player Quincy Promes is charged with smuggling cocaine. As the prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday, the Spartak Moscow professional, along with another 31-year-old Dutchman, is accused of importing "several hundred kilograms" of the banned substance in January 2020.
This is said to have been done in particular via the port of Antwerp in Belgium, the prosecutor's office told the French news agency AFP. The preliminary hearing will take place on Monday, according to local media. The player will not be present due to contractual obligations with his club, the Dutch news agency ANP reported.
In another case, the prosecutor's office had demanded two years in prison for promes just last March. He is said to have stabbed a cousin in the knee with a knife at a family celebration in July 2020, seriously injuring him.
The 31-year-old Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches, was under contract with Ajax at the time of the crime. At the beginning of 2021, he moved to Moscow. He played his last game for the Oranje at the European Championships in the summer of 2021 against the Czech Republic in Hungary.
