Elias Pettersson wanted to play in the World Cup but was forced to decline. A special type of insurance case prevents Pettersson.

The star's contract expires next year and because of that, he wants to insure not only his existing, but also the upcoming one.

Not possible, says Johan Stark, Secretary General of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association.

"I don't comment on individual players or speculation on sums. But in general, this applies: In accordance with the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) recommendations and the NHL's good memory, we usually insure existing contracts. Our view is that our competitors handle it the same, says Johan Stark to SVT Sport.

The IIHF contributes approximately SEK 230,000 per player. A sum that usually covers insurance during a championship, according to Stark.

– Sometimes we have to insure larger/longer contracts, but it is manageable. We cannot, however, insure agreements that do not exist. This is nothing new, but how we have always handled the issue, Stark continues.
