Toronto Swedes William Nylander and Calle Järnkrok each scored a goal at home against Tampa Bay.

But the effort was not enough for a win. Tampa Bay, who scored four goals on the power play, won 7–3.

The away team started the game with three goals in a row. William Nylander made it 3-2 in the second period, after teammate Ryan O'reilly scored a first goal for Toronto just over five minutes earlier.

But Toronto racked up penalties and Tampa Bay scored three more goals on the power play before the end of the period.

After another Tampa Bay goal in the third period, Calle Järnkrok reduced the score to 7–3, which was the final score of the game.

Even the New York Rangers won away against New Jersey in their first playoff game.

Rangers' Chris Kreider was the two-goal scorer and teammate Adam Fox recorded four assists in the 5–1 game.

In the Western Conference, Winnipeg beat Vegas 5–1. Swedish Vegas center William Karlsson scored a goal and Winnipeg center Adam Lowry was the two-goal scorer.

The teams face each other again in the second game of best-of-seven on Thursday.
