Speed kills, insists again and again Traffic. In fact, it puts on the table statistics that indicate that inadequate speed (which can be even below the limits, for example, when it rains) is the third most common concurrent factor in fatal accidents. In 2022 alone, she recalls, she was linked to 251 claims.

To control these excesses, it already has a wide deployment throughout the year either in the form of fixed, mobile or helicopter radars. But that's also why speed is the subject of specific and recurring campaigns. Like the one that will take place until next Sunday. Its objective is to monitor especially sections of risk associated with speed, as well as those points where the circulation exceeds the established limit and there is a high accident rate.

It is an initiative in which both the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and the local police will participate within a pan-European program. Being of a preventive nature, the speed control points will be announced, either with the variable message panels, or through circumstantial vertical signage.

But come on, it will also be fined and the penalty ranges between 100 and 600 euros, with the loss of between two and six points of the card, although with the minors credits are not lost. At the opposite extreme, great excesses can lead to prison sentences: this happens if the maximum speed limit is exceeded by more than 60 km / h in the city and 80 km / h on interurban roads. In that case, the penalties can range from three to six months in prison, a fine of six to twelve months or work for the benefit of the community from 31 to 90 days. In addition, offenders will be deprived of the right to drive for a period of between one and four years.

According to the recently known European project Baseline, Spanish drivers are among those who most respect speed limits, although not on secondary roads. Things can get even better from July 2024, when all new cars that are registered will have to carry the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) as standard.

This system, linked to the vehicle's navigator, shows the speed limit on the road on which it is circulating, and a signal recognition system that complements the digital cartography and detects temporary speed limits, helps the driver to know and respect those thresholds.
