Sweden's currently leading pole vaulter on the women's side tells on Instagram that she was raped as a young woman.

The 29-year-old writes that she is lucky to have people around her who saw and dared to push her to break the silence and "let out my demons".

"When I was little, I was raped. The police report says "aggravated rape of a child," Meijer writes.

There was never a trial because the perpetrator died before the legal process could be completed.

"I am sharing this to break the silence, so that you do not feel alone and so that you know that help and support is available."

The fact that Meijer now talks about being sexually abused for several years is praised by head coach Kajsa Bergqvist.

"I am hugely impressed by Michaela's courage. The fact that she goes out and tells the story is both important and incredibly strong. She is a warrior who rises from a terrible situation and who is now also able to tell the story. There are so many people who are exposed and it is very important that we dare to talk about it, says Bergqvist to the Swedish Athletics Federation's website.

SVT Sport is looking for Michaela Meijer.
