Manchester City dominated the second half of their Champions League quarter-final first leg clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, but coach Pep Guardiola looked stunned when asked by a reporter if it was the easiest win for his side this season.

The Spaniard replied: "It was never an easy game, I'm mentally exhausted, (I got old) 10 years today."

City took a big step towards the semi-finals after winning a clean treble at home to Germany.

Erling Haaland raised his tally to 45 goals with City in all competitions, a record for a player in the Premier League in one season.

Rodri opened the scoring in the first half with a superb long-range shot, before Bernardo Silva extended the home side's advantage with a header.

However, Guardiola insisted City would not rest when they visit his former club in Munich on Wednesday.

"You have to put in a strong performance in two games to get these strong teams out, not one," the Spaniard said.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel agreed with his Spanish counterpart.

The German coach, who led Chelsea to the Champions League title at the expense of City in 2021, added: "In football nothing is settled, the next match at home in Germany and it is not over until the end of the two matches."

The two goalkeepers intervened in the second half to save their teams from several chances.

Guardiola said: "Bayern were better in a period of the game. We made amends in the second half and in the latter part of the game, we were the better side in the final minutes, we scored three great goals and we had a lot of chances".

"Yes, it's an amazing result, but I know what the second leg at the Allianz Arena (Bayern) means... I played there a lot, three years (as Bayern coach), and I know how exceptional this team is in Europe."

The Spaniard's men have made history in the continental competition, becoming the first Premier League side to achieve the longest unbeaten streak in the Champions League at home, drawing twice and winning 23 times in 25 games at the Etihad Stadium.

Tuchel took over as Bayern manager at the end of last month after the sudden dismissal of former coach Julian Nagelsmann.

The German coach asked his players not to focus on the result of the first leg.

"Because we deserved a better result, this result does not reflect the course of the game. That's the challenge and we have to focus on what we did well in the game; we played with character, with courage, with the right approach and with efficiency".

Bayern have won the title six times, and lead the Bundesliga, two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.

The Champions League title is the only title that Guardiola lacks with City, who are chasing leaders Arsenal for the Premier League title.
