Al Ahly, the record holder in the number of titles in this competition with 10 editions, and the runner-up of the last edition, stripped its guest Al Hilal from second place in the group with a difference of two direct confrontations after they equalized points with 10 each, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African champions of the group, who beat Cameroonian Cotton Club 2-1.
Al-Ahli had lost the first leg by a goal, at the "Blue Jewel" stadium in Omdurman, where he needed to win by a single goal or by two goals if he conceded today, but he hit the treble.
Al-Hilal paid dearly for the waste of its international player Athar Al-Taher a penalty kick in stoppage time in the match against Sundowns (1-1) in the fifth round that was enough to settle things before facing the Cairo club.
