Andreescu won the U.S. Open as a 19-year-old in 2019 but has had problems with injuries and is now ranked 31st in the world, compared to fourth place after the title in New York.

In Miami, Andreescu had played very convincingly, beating meritorious players such as Emma Raducanu, Maria Sakkari and Sofia Kenin before the injury hit in the match against Ekaterina Alexandrova on Tuesday morning. At a 6-7(0-7),0-2 deficit, Andreescu made a lateral move and just collapsed on the baseline in severe torment. It didn't look serious when it happened.

Took seven months for Zverev to come back

She was rolled out in severe agony and later wrote on Instagram that it was the worst pain she had felt and prayed lest it be a serious injury.

"The investigation shows that two ligaments in the left foot were torn off. It's hard to judge how long I'll be gone but it could have been much worse," Andreescu writes, hoping she'll be back soon and that rehab has already started.

Alexander Zverev suffered a similar injury with three torn ligaments and also had to leave the pitch and the meeting with Rafael Nadal at the French Open last year in a wheelchair. It took seven months for the German to come back, then after surgery and setbacks.
