The rules of football will change significantly from July 1st. The IFAB, the body that governs the rules of this sport, has decided to make some changes such as the prohibition for goalkeepers to distract the opposing shooter or the limitation of the time to celebrate a goal.

Small revolution in football. The body that determines the rules of the most popular sport in the world, the IFAB, has decided to change the rules from 1 July. These changes will concern in particular penalties but also goal celebrations. These new rules will come into force from the 2023-2024 season and will concern all national and international competitions, from Ligue 1 to the World Cup and the Champions League.

For penalties, goalkeepers will no longer have the right to destabilize the opposing shooter. No more dancing as the former Lens goalkeeper Charles Itandje Doucouré used to do or feints of body to the right or left before the player rushes to hit the ball.

Mike Maignan revolted

An announcement that did not please the goalkeeper of the Blues Mike Maignan, author of a penalty stop against the Netherlands last Friday during the large victory of the Blues (4-0). The latter reacted ironically on Twitter, even asking that the goalkeepers be back to the ball during the penalty.

New IFAB rules for penalties in 2026:

And in case of stoppage, the AC Milan player even suggests granting an indirect free kick so that the unfortunate shooter gets a second chance. Humor to denounce a rule that Nabil Djellit considers "serious". "Football is folklore, there is a question of bluffing. Let us remove the guards, "said the columnist in Europe 1 Sport (every evening from 20 hours to 23 hours on Europe 1). "Destabilizing is also part of the game," added Laurent Fournier at the microphone of Lionel Rosso.

Goal celebrations

Other rules will also undergo a major change. Among them, the celebrations on the goals. The IFAB has decided to regulate the time of joy after each goal. The referee will now have to count the seconds lost and then add them to the accumulation of extra time: "The goal celebrations will now be listed separately," reads the statement.

Finally, some less important rules will also come into force on 1 July. This will apply to goals scored when an additional person appears on the pitch (pitch invasion or substitute) or play actions on a goal in an offside situation. The IFAB is due to communicate soon to shed light on these new rules that could upset world football as early as next season.
