The match in Lisbon was the veteran's 197th international cap, meaning Ronaldo passes former record holder Bader Al-Mutawa from Kuwait.

"Records are my motivation. I want to be the one with the most caps in history. It had made me proud. But it doesn't end there. I still want to be called up to the national team," Ronaldo said earlier, according to AFP.

Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal back in 2003 and during this winter's World Cup in Qatar became the first male player to score in five World Cup finals.

He now plays for Saudi club al-Nassr after leaving Premier League side Manchester United under controversial circumstances.

The match was won by Portugal 4–0 after goals by João Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and twice Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has now scored 120 goals in his 197 caps for Portugal.
