244,930 km per hour – this is the new Swedish record in women's speedskiing. The record gave Britta Backlund world championship gold in the S1 class on Wednesday morning.

The triumph comes just days after Backlund took home the fourth straight World Cup victory in speedski this season.

The previous Swedish record of 242,590 km per hour was set by Sanna Tidstrand in Les Arcs in 2006, 17 years ago.

240 cm long skis

Britta Backlund also came close to breaking the world record in women's speed ski of 247.083 held by Valentina Greggio, from Italy.

Christian Jansson holds the Swedish men's speedski record of 248.105 km per hour from 2017.

In the S1 class, which is the fastest class, the skis are about 240 cm long and weigh almost 15 kilograms per pair.
