Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti complained publicly more than once in the minutes following the Clásico about his team's loss at Camp Nou to Barcelona (2-1) after Marco Asensio's goal was ruled out for offside.

In his post-match press conference, the Italian coach said: "We are sad, pained, but proud of the game we played. The game was complete from the first minute to the last minute. We didn't win it because of offside we still have doubts about him and we will return to Madrid with those doubts."

The VAR intervened to inform the referee that the goal – which put the Merengue ahead against the Blaugrana in the 80th minute of the match – was offside and should be cancelled.

While a section of the press in Madrid and Real Madrid television sided with Ancelotti's argument, this narrative was not generally shared by the international media that dealt with the incident.

German Bild: Ancelotti's anger is unfounded

"What happened? In the 80th minute, Real Madrid striker Marco Asensio scored after a coordinated attack gave the Spanish capital a 2-1 lead, but VAR ruled out the goal. The Spaniard was offside which was confirmed by the mouse technique. In the end, the referee's decision is correct. The goal is illegal and therefore Ancelotti's anger is baseless. "Great Clasico. The riyal is angry. The championship is almost in Barcelona's pocket. A perfect evening for Barcelona".
