Former Premier League player Christian Atsu is one of those who died as a result of the earthquake in Turkey.

After being missing for over a week, the Hatayspor player was found in the crowds.

Ahead of the match between Newcastle and Liverpool, Atsu was praised.

The players and referees gathered at the center circle and applauded the spectators together for a minute.

In the stands sat the Ghanaian's widow Marie-Claire Rupio, with tears in her eyes, and two children.

Atsu belonged to Chelsea between 2013 and 2017 but was loaned to, among others, Newcastle, with whom he played up to the top flight in the 2016-2017 season.

He has also made 60 A international appearances for Ghana, the most recent in 2019. Since last autumn he played in the Turkish club Hatayspor.

Alexander Isak started for Newcastle

Alexander Isak started for Newcastle and played 64 minutes before being substituted.

But it was Liverpool who won 2–0 after goals from Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo.

The victory was Liverpool's second in a row in league play and the team is eighth in the Premier League while Newcastle are fourth in the table.
