The strong earthquake, 7.8 on the Richter scale, occurred early in the morning when most people were sleeping in the border areas of Turkey and Syria.

Over 35,000 people have been found dead and that number is rising.

"It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Cemal Kütahya, the captain of our national men's handball team, and his son Çınar Kütahya, who were buried under the rubble of the house where they lived in the city of Antakya," writes the Turkish Handball Federation in a press release.

Professional in Romania

Father and son Kütahya were found under the rubble of the collapsed building where he lived in Antakya.

He played for Hatay Büyükșehir Belediyespor, who led the Turkish league with 14 wins and one draw in the 15 games played.

During his career, he was for a period a professional in the Romanian club CSU Suceava.

Turkey did not participate in the handball World Cup in Sweden and Poland a couple of weeks ago.

The Turkish Football League has suspended all its matches until March 3.
