Shocking scenes unfolded at the International Fencing Federation's congress in Lausanne in November, something Dagens Nyheter was the first to report on.

When Sweden's president Otto Drakenberg raised the rights of LGBTQ people from the podium, the protests began.

Loud knocking from several parts of the hall drowned out his voice.

The incident was caught on film by the Swedish Fencing Association's vice president Ana Valero-Collantes.

There you can also hear how the International Fencing Federation's vice-chairman, the Egyptian Abdelmoneim Elhamy El Husseiny, interrupts Drakenberg.

The Swede: "It was scary"

- We are here to talk about the sport, not about what you intend to bring up.

Please stop immediately, he said, which was met with applause and cheers from parts of the audience.

Despite this, Drakenberg did not give up, but replied that he had the right to speak "in a democratic world".

- It was very surprising.

I have never seen anyone be treated in that way, although Sweden has raised uncomfortable questions in the past as well.

Shocking, says Otto Drakenberg to SVT Sport.

- And perhaps the most surprising thing was that no one, no one from the free world stands up.

That the wall of complaint can stand unchallenged.

I thought that was terrifying.

Large majority for Saudi Arabia

According to Drakenberg, his goal with the speech was to highlight the problem of sportswashing.

He thinks it is problematic that a country like Saudi Arabia organizes championships because they do not respect the rights of women and LGBTQ people.

The vice-chairman thinks it is wrong to drag politics into sport, what do you say about that?

- I think that ever since at least 1980, we have been through that issue in society.

And I think most people who look at this soberly understand that these days it is not possible to distinguish between sports and politics.

They are inextricably linked.

Despite Drakenberg's objections, Congress voted overwhelmingly for Saudi Arabia, as the sole applicant nation, to host the 2024 Cadet and Junior World Championships.

SVT Sport seeks the international fencing federation for a comment.
