Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he did not understand how Chelsea managed to spend so much money during the transfer window.

Chelsea spent nearly 300 million pounds ($367 million) to sign 8 players in the last winter transfer window, including Enzo Fernandez, who joined the London team in a British record deal.

Chelsea managed to circumvent the rules of fair financial play by distributing the value of deals over long-term contracts, along with other tricks, which Klopp does not understand.

"I will not speak without my lawyer," Klopp joked, at a press conference today, Friday, on the eve of the Wolverhampton match.

"I don't understand this part of the industry but it's a huge number. They are all very good players, so congratulations. I don't understand how they did it, but it's not up to me to explain how it works."

Liverpool was not successful last January, winning once in 6 matches in all competitions, to finish ninth in the league.

At the same stage last year, the club came close to achieving an unprecedented quadruple of titles, but Klopp said that players cannot always be at the top of their level every season.

"Of course some players have not reached the usual level. One of the best examples is (Manchester United player) Marcus Rashford, his current level compared to last year," he said.

"I'm not sure he can even explain why. That's the way things are. You have to fight to get through the gap between the two extremes."
